What’s Your Weight Range?

Tuesday, Mar 1st, 2011

I spent a month in European cities this winter, and it was rare to see a person who was not trim. Most Americans are of the same genetic stock, so let’s not blame “genes” for an overwhelming 2/3rds of adults being overweight and obese. It makes no sense. Finally, a bit more honesty is coming into dietary guidelines for Americans: Eat Less, says the USDA.

In addition to the 9” plate, another strategy I use to stay within my ideal Body Mass Index (BMI), is know what my acceptable “weight range” is for me, and stand on the scale at least once a week to see how I am measuring up. If I am at the top of the range, I start paying better attention to my food and beverage choices  When dropping a few pounds, I check the scale daily at the same time – right after awakening. I use a scale with a digital read that measure half-pounds. I find it encouraging when I have lost a half-pound.

If you are not sure what your ideal weight range should be, check out a BMI chart for your height or consult your doctor. Think about the weight you were when you wore your senior prom dress, or your first tux.  You’ll figure it out pretty quick. Give yourself 5 pounds leeway. Then go for it!
